Top 10 Things Learned in College

I will be the first to admit I was a naive teenager when I first went to college. Since then I’ve learned a lot. I’ve taken a lot of classes, been involved in a lot of different programs and clubs and am farther in life than I would have predicted when I first came to college.

  1. Stand up for yourself, send e-mails remind people of their responsibilities
  2. You don’t need to be friends with everyone you meet on Facebook. Especially that girl you met that one time at that one thing. Or that girl who the only thing in common is that class you had together freshman year of high school. Sure, it was nice being able to message her that semester but it’s been four years since you talked to her.
  3. If someone keeps blowing you off or changing plans they’re not worth it.
  4. Sometimes impulses are the best decision ever. Like dying your hair, applying to study abroad, deciding to stay the summer at school.
  5. Take on more responsibility than you think you can handle because you’ll learn time management and how to deal with stress. Plus, your resume will be shining.
  6. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Did you really think that resume you made in ten minutes during high school will get you a good job in college? It didn’t even get you one in high school.
  7. Dress nicely, just because. More than once you will have to make an impromptu visit to a professor’s office. But you don’t have to look like that every day. Just look presentable.
  8. Trust the little voice in your head. If you’re thinking you should leave, then you probably should. Just pretend your mom is calling or that you have homework. It’s better to be safe than sorry. That voice may be wrong about this a lot but the times it’s not are the times you’re going to wish you had listened.
  9. Just be yourself. Don’t try to imitate others, in manner of speaking or actions. Sure some things you pick up just by being around people, but don’t let them replace what you actually believe in. You are your own person.
  10. Don’t waste time on the players; you’re only going to get hurt. If your first thought before kissing a guy is “I’m just tired of having my first kiss weigh down on me” you shouldn’t be kissing him anyway.
