Most disappointing reads of 2018

I had a very “meh” reading year. My average rating on Goodreads is 3.5 and honestly that seems high to me. I feel like I rated more books two and one stars during this year and so many of the hyped books fell short.

A part of me wants to list every single disappointment this year but that’s more negative than I feel like getting and would take a while. I’m just going to list five that come to mind. December has been amazing for reading so I’m hoping that keeps up in 2019.

Also just a disclaimer that these books aren’t bad; they just weren’t what I was expecting or were just overhyped etc. I also don’t like writing negative posts so this is a rarity.

Sometimes I Lie by Alice Feeney

I can’t really say much about this one because I don’t even remember most of it. I know everyone else loved it and I was so looking forward to reading this one. Unfortunately, it just didn’t do it for me. More information on my review here.

The Cabin At The End of The World

This one had so. much. hype. on the horror area of Twitter. I think if it had not been built up so much I would have enjoyed it a lot more. I actually do plan on reading more of Tremblay’s work because I did really like his writing.

The Death Of Mrs. Westaway by Ruth Ware

Everyone has heard of Ruth Ware so I was expecting this to be such a page turner as everyone says her other books are. I started out loving this book and all the theories rolled around in my head but then it just dragged on. I do want to read more of her books because I’m really hoping this is just a fluke

Sleeping Beauties by Stephen King

I actually don’t have much more to add about this one other than what’s in my review. Basically it was just really really slow and it didn’t feel like much actually happened and when something did it was very jumbled.

Campfire by Shawn Sarles

My main problem with this one was the beginning and the characters. As I got farther into the book I got more into it but the stories told around the campfire were better than the actual story and the characters are very cookie cutter.

So I actually learned more about my reading tastes this year. I don’t like slow moving thrillers. I want things to happen the entire time. I hate the build up.

What books disappointed you this year? Have you read any of these and what were your thoughts on them?

  1. The only book on your list I’ve read is The Cabin at the End of the World and I totally agree with you. It’s a shame because A Head Full of Ghosts, his other book was great

  2. I am so bummed about Sometimes I Lie and Cabin At The End of the Woods. I plan to read Sometimes I Lie soon. I not too hyped for it though. I also was disappointed in The Death Of Mrs. Westaway. I really did not enjoy it like I thought I would. Idr right now if you’ve read The Woman in Cabin 10 but you should check that out. Also Campfire was very disappointing too. You already know since we read that together.
