My experience at Universal’s Mardi Gras

;There are quite a few things I got to experience here before everything got locked down and one of them was the Universal’s Mardi Gras party in Florida. I’m not going to pretend to have experienced it to the fullest. All of the concerts I wanted to go to had been cancelled and there was a lot of food and drinks I didn’t try.

This was put together from my limited experience and if you’d like to know more Orlando Informer put together an actual guide.

Expectations

Mardi Gras is one of the giant events they hold that last months. It went from Feb 1st to March 15th (originally April 2nd was the last day). From the pictures and advertising it looked amazing, like a giant party basically. I was expecting it to be on Horror Nights level without the houses and that was my first mistake. But also HHN was the only event I’d been to at Universal before.

Layout

Universal’s Mardi Gras is primarily in the Courtyard area by The Mummy and Jimmy Fallon and the concerts are held at the stage in front of Rip Ride Rock-It. This event takes place from 4 p.m. until park close so all of the rides are open for the entire thing. It’s included in the general park ticket. That also means there’s less of a wait for certain rides during the parade (especially the rides that are closer to the parade route).

Food and drinks

I got to try two of the alcoholic drinks, Blue Voodoo and High Seas Twister if I remember correctly and got the cool light up glass they offer thinking I’d be back more than I actually was (thanks Corona). Next time I want to try the Baby Cakes as well, if they have it because it sounded interesting. One thing about their drinks is that they have multiple shots in there so I’d get it closer to the beginning of Mardi Gras. I also wish I had gone to the Mimosa Bar at Cafe la Bamba. And yes, I am writing down the things I wish I had done so I remember next year.

The only food I had this year was the Crab Etouffee which was delicious. All of their food is sample portions so you can have mulitple or mix and match between different places, I just chose not to.

Citywalk also had Mardi Gras-themed food and I got the doughnut at Voodoo Doughnut which was filled with a cinnamon sugar and it was amazing. I could have eaten ten.

Mardi Gras FloatsParade

The parade was at different times each night but the app had the schedule for the entire time Mardi Gras was going on. In terms of quality the parade was awesome. Some floats contained the Mardi Gras workers and some contained guests. There were some workers and stilt walkers doing dances between the floats and there were beads. Lots of beads. I only saw the parade once and I was trying not to catch too many because I knew I wouldn’t do anything with them anyway. I wish there was a place to return them after the parade if you don’t want to keep them.

The floats were absolutely gorgeous and blew me away. Some were two story which was even more amazing. I had been planning to go to the parade multiple times and take pictures the second time but I did get one picture for Snapchat.

Tribute Store

This gave me HHN vibes. The scent was basically the same as some of the houses as Paige pointed out. You could get merch at a lot of the stores but this was a place that was just Universal’s Mardi Gras merch and the atmosphere was darker and a spookier vibe. I was tempted to buy a mask just because but I also didn’t want to spend money or carry it around. This might actually be why I don’t have much merch to begin with; I talk myself out of it a lot.

Overall it was quite enjoyable, I wish I had been able to go more but it is what it is. I’m looking forward to next year’s. I don’t think I personally would make a trip just for Mardi Gras unless there was a specific concert I wanted to see.

Has anyone experienced Mardi Gras anywhere? Any good stories of Universal?

  1. I’ve never been to Mardi Gras, we don’t have it in the UK. But it sounds like a very fun time!
I’ve been to a few carnivals and festivals before that sounds kind of similar though.
    Cool post Jenna! 😁

  3. Wow, this sounds like so much fun! I’ve always wanted to go celebrate Mardi Gras in Louisiana where they do the huge street festivals! I didn’t know they did anything like that at Universal though, that’s really cool!

  4. True, it just sucks cause I moved down here for the parks/ events/ weather and I can’t fully enjoy any of it. Thankfully the nature parks are slowly opening up so I can explore those with my roommate.

  5. Urgh that’s awful. The reason I chose Stirling Scotland as my Erasmus university destination was because my fiance and I wanted to travel to all the places my dad loved when he lived in the UK, but we didn’t do anything because I was so busy with uni and by the time it was finished, it was the lockdown. That’s good then! We will make a list of our priority travels we want to do here and come back next year or the year after
